Laura Butt

Laura is a Swanage-based textile artist. In the last 3 years she has taken the opportunity to change her career from working as an ASC teacher to explore textile-based artwork. She is self-taught and reached her current method of expression through experimentation. She takes inspiration from the patterns she sees around her. She constructs images in fabrics, with a focus on layering, to portray the balance between light and dark. She first sketches the subject in pencil, pen or charcoal before using this study to create a collage of fabric. She follows this with free motion machine embroidery to sketch and shade, adding the detail of the subject to the material.
