Laura Doherty
My name is Laura Doherty. I am a first class honours graduate from the University of The Arts London. My focus resides with oil paintings and detailed graphite drawings. I have worked as a mural artist for schools, cafes and businesses, and I found this strong sense of community to be particularly rewarding and inspiring in my practice. I aim to produce a strong theoretical undertone to my works, creating a diverse discussion about the role of painted landscapes, seascapes, portraits and animals in the contemporary art world.
My practice primarily focuses on the deliberation of oil paint in visual culture. It is one of the oldest mediums to be used in artistry, and without doubt the most flexible and forgiving. I like to provide a balance of traditional media with an unconventional addition such as a strong colour palette for the background, bringing the foreground to complete attention, or a seascape that is detailed enough yet not too photographic offering a dreamlike and almost unrealistic atmosphere. Spatially speaking, my works can juxtapose in size with the sentiment of private intimacy, or in contrast to this providing a large display for a domestic atmosphere.
